The village itself

Small, and better for it.

Thornbury is a short main street, a harbour, and the Beaver River running through the middle of it to the bay. It has more good food per resident than a village this size has any right to, and a marina full of boats from May. You can also park, which after twenty minutes circling Collingwood on a Saturday counts for something.

The fishway beside the dam is the thing to see. It was built so trout and salmon can get past the dam and upstream, and there is a viewing area where you can watch them try. Rainbow trout in spring, chinook salmon in autumn. It costs nothing and most children will not leave.

The harbour and the beach beside it are where the village goes on a hot afternoon. There is a pier people jump off, with a ladder to get back out, and the water is cold enough to be memorable well into July.

The escarpment behind

Five clubs, none of them yours.

The single most useful thing anyone can tell you before booking a ski trip here, and almost nothing written about this village says it.

Look up from Thornbury and you are looking at Georgian Peaks — the highest vertical in Ontario at around 250 metres, cut into the escarpment a couple of minutes from the main street. It is a private member club. So are Craigleith, Alpine and Osler Bluff along the same face toward Collingwood, and Beaver Valley inland. None of them sell day tickets to the public.

Blue Mountain Resort is the public hill: the largest in Ontario, on the Ikon Pass, selling lift tickets, rentals, lessons and night skiing, with a village at the base. It is a short drive east and it is what you plan a ski week around.

Staying near Thornbury is still a good idea in winter — you are close to everything and away from the resort crowd. You just want to know which hill you are going to before you leave home.

The Georgian Trail: Runs through Thornbury on the old rail bed, flat and paved, west to Meaford and east toward Collingwood. Cycling for any ability, and walked all winter.
Scandinave Spa: Outdoor hot pools, cold plunges and steam in the woods below the escarpment, with a silence rule that is actually enforced. Books out on winter weekends.
Blue Mountain Village: The base village at the resort, a short drive east — restaurants, shops and the gondola. Busy, and the reason some people prefer to stay out this way.
Collingwood: About 20 km east along the shore. More restaurants, more shops, more traffic. Worth an evening.
The Beaver Valley: Follow the river inland and south. The best drive in the region, and exceptional in the first two weeks of October.
Meaford: West along the bay: a working harbour town, apple country, and a theatre on the main street. The municipality this property sits in.
