Where to stay near Blue Mountain, and what you trade for each.
The village, Collingwood, Thornbury, Meaford, or a house in the country between them. Each suits a different trip, and the right answer depends more on your evenings than on your skiing.

The options
Five bases, side by side.
Drive times are to the Blue Mountain village in normal conditions. Allow more when it is snowing and on busy weekends.
- Blue Mountain Village
- At the foot of the lifts: walkable, with restaurants, bars and shops, and busy all year. Most of the accommodation is condominiums and hotel rooms. Best for a couple or a small group who want to park the car and forget it. Least good for a large group wanting one house, or anyone who has come for quiet.
- Collingwood · about 13 minutes
- The largest town in the area, with the widest choice of restaurants and shops, a harbourfront and the Georgian Trail. Best if you want to walk to dinner and still be close to the hill. Busier and more built-up than anywhere west of it.
- Thornbury · 17 to 19 minutes
- A small harbour village at the mouth of the Beaver River, with a fish ladder and more good places to eat than its size suggests. Best for a relaxed base with character that is still close to the skiing. There is not a lot of accommodation in the village itself.
- Meaford · about 30 minutes
- A working harbour town rather than a resort one: the waterfront trail, Meaford Hall, two town beaches and the apple country behind it. Best for a slower trip where skiing is one part of it. The furthest of the towns from the hill.
- A house in the country between them
- Farmland and escarpment between Meaford, Thornbury and Collingwood, where the larger houses on their own land are. Best for a group of eight or more that wants one roof, space and a view. You will drive to everything, including dinner.
By trip
Pick by the evening, not the hill.
A couple’s ski weekend. The village. Walking back from the lifts to a hot shower and dinner is worth the crowds for two nights.
A family ski trip. Collingwood or a condo near the hill if the children are small and naps matter; a house further out if there are two families or teenagers who need somewhere to go.
A group of ten or twelve. A single house, almost always outside the village, where most of the accommodation is built for four to six. The drive is the price of keeping everybody under one roof.
A quiet weekend, with or without skiing. Thornbury or Meaford. The harbours, the Beaver Valley and the Bruce Trail are closer, and the hill is about half an hour away.
A company retreat. A private house, where the group works at one table and nobody else is in the building; the village is close enough for one evening out.
Where we fit
Our house, and when it is the wrong choice.
The Collingview is in the country between Meaford and Thornbury, about 25 to 30 minutes from the Blue Mountain village: four bedrooms, four bathrooms, room for eight in beds and up to twelve depending on the group, on 2.5 acres with a rooftop hot tub and a view over the Beaver Valley and a band of Georgian Bay.
It is the wrong house if you want to walk to the lifts, if you do not want to drive once you arrive, or if it is one night for two people. For those, the village or a hotel in Collingwood will suit you better, and we would rather say so here.
